‘History of Funk’ auteur en funkradiomaker Rickey Vincent zette gisteren op Facebook zijn favoriete funk van 2015 op een rijtje met vanzelfsprekend aandacht voor het album ‘To Pimp A Butterfly’ van Kendrick Lamar (“redefining the standards of hip hop, and making a bold statement in the Face of Funk: that its time to be serious, soulful, musical and deliver a message if you really care about black music and black people”) en een speciale vermelding van funkreleases die afgelopen jaar uit Europa kwamen;
“The European funkers are going off. From Russia the band Soul Surfers hits like any stateside groove band, and I recently did another Euro-Peein’ funk special on my radio show that featured DaFonk and Azel Groovement from France, Rony Playstation from Serbia, Seven Eleven and Octave Pussy from the Netherlands, Bobby Soul and Space Bugs from Italy, and a whole lotta British funk. Damn!”
Vooral het album ‘Assfunk’ van OctavePussy krijgt veel waardering van de funkprofessor. Rickey schrijft hierover het volgende:
“Damn. These hardcore funkers from the Netherlands just continue to cook up their lunatic brand of nasty, bass-heavy, groove heavy, soulful, jazzy BANGIN’ stompin’ funk! This record has EVERY THANG a funkateer can ask for in a funk album. Hot, hard grooves, wicked musicianship, hilarious funk chants, loony con-cepts, and the undeniably delicious presence of Justine de Jong a.k.a. Juicy Rock on vocals make this the meanest Funk album of 2015. There are so many super heavy jams on this disc: The title track “Assfunk” has ruthless pocket, “Come On With Your Come On” is massive, the single “Funk in Your Funk” can’t be touched for its bass-heavy stank, “R U Down 4 Love?” cooks for 8 minutes, and “Rank My Doodle Gurl” you have to ask yo mama about that one…check this out on itunes and you won’t be disappointed.”
Ook Tiny Funk’s album ‘Burger Time’ is niet aan Rickey’s aandacht ontsnapt:
“Another Monster Funker from the Netherlands put together another nasty funk slice, with polished production and some crazy upbeat – upbeat as in clubby dance funk – that still continues to stank. The title tune features our own Phil Colley Sr on vocals, and brings that US-Euro connection that is keeping that Funk vibe alive nowadays.”
Het album ‘Back to the Source’ van Seven Eleven krijgt een eervolle vermelding.
